I discovered a small fleck of rust on one of my car doors this morning. It's about the size of a pencil or pen point but it is definitely rust. My question is, can I just put a spot of paint on it and it will stop the oxidation of the rust? Or-should I go big guns and sand off the spot to good metal and repaint the spot?

Painting over it won't stop it, unfortunately. You're going to have to sand it all away, paint, put on the clear coat, etc. Look into rust-resistant primers for the spot if you think it's a prime spot for rust to form.

Sorry Chandler but I agree with spinner. It's going to have to be sanded down, primed and painted to prevent the further rusting of the metal. It seems like a lot of work, but it's going to prevent further rusting.
