Default Pre-Packaged or Custom?

I've watched a few friends add great sound systems to their cars, and they usually buy a fancy player, some subs, mids, heights, an amp or two, all separate. A local electronics store is offering a package deal that would be a lot cheaper to buy, but it doesn't seem to be selling well. I think it's because people prefer to customize their system as much as possible - but in these days where money is tight, you'd think some would make exceptions. What would you prefer?

I bought one of those all-in-one packages and the cousin who installed it for me told me that it wasn't worth whatever I paid for it. He said to expect the speakers to die quickly, so now I worry about playing my music loud. It's working for now, though, so I'm just going with it.
