    Wrecker service

I understand totally. It's good to have someone who knows cars within yelling distance. I frequent a garage owned by a guy I went to school with. We have a friendly chat now and then, and those chats go a long way toward my getting good service.

    Hate the defrost

We have a defrost that works, but sometimes the particular kind of fog or weather we're having is difficult to figure out. Don't you just hate it when it gets so foggy inside or out that you can't even see? That's when we have to pull over to figure out which combination of controls will get the...

    Lectures on tape

I'm going to be on the road a day a week for a few months starting next week. I thought I'd try taking an audio course of some sort. Have you any recommendations? I looked at the book store, but I think I'm going to have to dig around online this weekend for a better selection.

    Rain-X for Ice

I didn't know about Rain-X. I will be on the road once a week from now until the early spring. I may just look into this. I used to pour Coke on the windshield to help with some of the build-up. I can't say it helps all that much.

    Seat covers

I hated seat covers because they never would stay on. One thing I really liked on my old car were some of the seat covers made of round wooden balls. They helped protect the seat, and they were also extremely comfortable.

    Bike racks and bike carriers

For those of you who have used bicycle racks on top of your car or racks on the back, what type do you like the most? We're considering getting bikes this spring and want to carry them. I'm short and wondering how difficult it is to use those carriers where the bike sits on top of your car.

Fixing a tear in the seat

Good luck fixing your seat. We've all been in cars where duct tape was the repair medium of choice, and I don't recommend it, no matter how well it might hold up.

    Owner's Manual

I would keep checking at eBay and perhaps even go to their list where buyers can list items they are looking for. I would also check Half.com and do a comprehensive Google search.

    Wheeler Dealers

I don't think this show comes on any of our stations. We do get "Storage Wars," but I've never seen anything that vaguely resembles what you're talking about. I can't imagine it being a thrill to watch.

    Car Names

I always figured it was the ad agencies. They have to stay on their feet to compete with each other. Trends in what's going on at the time with the target audience come into play as well.

What do you use to plow?

We don't get a lot of snow around here, but when we do, we usually just wait a day or two before we head out onto the streets. I do try to get the driveway cleared of snow before it melts and refreezes. For that, a good shovel works fine.

    Rotating Tires

I don't think we've rotated our tires in a year or so. That said, I'm going to put it on the list for the very next oil change. We haven't driven far out of town in several months, but that doesn't mean we haven't put wear and tear on our tires.

    Almost died!

Safe driving This is one reason we stay tucked into our own home on New Year's Eve. People drive foolishly enough when they're not out late partying and drinking. It's not worth the extra chance of being on the highway as far as I'm concerned. We will bring in 2013 from home.

    Favorite car movie

We were batting around movie titles over the holidays with some of the different generations in our family. The subject came around to all-time favorite movies featuring cars. Of course, movies like "Cars," "Christine" and "Back to the Future" came up. What other movies rank up there in your...

    That New Car Smell

New car smell When you have your car washed the next time, ask that they use the new car smell fragrance instead of any of the other ones. It's the only fragrance I allow them to spray into my cars.

    Car trouble out of town

Fixing my car In looking back, towing it home would probably have been the best way to go. With all the Christmas traffic and the holiday coming up, I just left it there and had it repaired. As it turns out, it wasn't too big a repair bill. We're driving to collect it today.

    Christmas storage?

Christmas storage At least some of you have places where you can put things together ahead of time. We went through a phase where everything was made of plastic and had to have all these stickers on the toys before they were good to go. We were 5:30 a.m. getting to bed one year.

Who is getting a new car?

New car for Christmas When I was in high school, the last bell rang, and everyone headed out to the parking lot. There, right in the middle of the path to the lot, parked where no one could miss it, was a shiny, black new sports car with a gigantic red bow on top of it. The kid finally came out...

    Half of the traveling done!

Traveling during the holidays The worst thing about traveling this time of year, of course, is the bumper-to-bumper traffic. I like to keep a good distance between myself and the cars in front, but the people behind us don't seem to be as careful. It's the pushy drivers that bother me the most...

    Motorcycle Christmas card

Motorcycle photos This reminds me of a photo I took of my brother's wife this past summer. She is the stodgiest, uptight female on the planet. She never smiles or approves of anything. A friend came over on his new red Harley, and we were all taking turns sitting astride it, taking pictures of...
