98 Ford Escort ZX2 Alternator Question

Right now I believe my car is having transmission issues. I'm starting with poor circulation of the transmission fluid. My question today however is as follows:

Is there anything in this area (transmission) or related that could severally shorten the lifespan of an alternator? Run the alternator out or wear it out faster than normal?

My car will hit about 5,000rpm around 30mph a few minutes after starting it.
Popping the car into drive (D) from over-drive usually brings the rpms down and then popping it back into over-drive will set the car right and it feels as if it shifts properly, sets in to place and drives somewhat normally. Overall though the car has a hard time accelerating, hesitates to shift gears, and feels as though it's just working too hard to travel at 30+mph.

I just put a new alternator in it seeing as the previous one died and I'm worried about this new alternator. Any help or info would be greatly appreciated.
