How hard is it to change your car's brake shoes?

I had the front brakes done about a year ago, but now the back brakes need to be replaced. The mechanic quoted $175, but it looks like you can buy your own brake shoes for about $75. I was wondering how hard is it to replace brake shoes? Is this something you can safely do yourself?

My hubby changes mine with no problems. He curses a bit when he knocks his knuckle on the underside of the car. My dad always changed the brake pads too in all vehicles.

Yes. You can safely do it yourself. Just make sure you have the right tools and some kind of step by step guide if you've never done it yourself before.

Thanks for the info! We just got a coupon for an auto place and it looks like we can save some money on brake shoes right now. Guess I know where we will be going this weekend.

If you have never done it before, I probably wouldn't even though it is not that difficult. The brakes are a bad thing to start practicing DIY auto repair on, but that is just my opinion.
