What causes excessive oil consumption?

I have a 1997 Saturn that is burning oil like crazy. I'm probably going through 2 quarts each month. I've checked for oil leaks on my garage floor and that's not the issue. Anyone have any thoughts on what might be happening?

Burning oil

I know I abused a new car over five years when I was younger and ended up paying the price by having metal filings in my engine. I think that came from not changing the oil and the sludge build-up that came into play. Maybe this contributes to using more oil or to burning oil? I'm not sure at all.

I think I remember reading about how 1997 Saturns burn oil naturally because of a flaw in the engine design but 2 quarts a month seems really high. If nothing is leaking then it could be something like worn piston rings.

If it's the rings, that'll cost me more than the car is worth. :ezpi_sad: Guess I'll have to really think about what to do next.
