    International driver's licencing

I was told that an "international" drivers' licence does not exist as it once did, and that the folks that have taken the trouble to obtain one are finding themselves on the short end of the stick and are not being given parody/equivalency by some countries. Is there an international standard...

    Fly windows

I had reason to muse about fly windows, and how I actually miss them in my truck: I'd like to see them come back, in truth. There was a reason for them, and I still reach for one when the windows on the truck begin to fog up!

    Dumb question

I saw a wicked set of old wheels out on the road yesterday, a Hemi 'Cuda, no less... But I had to wonder, if that's the original engine (and it sure sounded like it was), that engine was meant to run LEADED gasoline... does the owner have to add a lead additive or something to the fuel to run it?

    Octane vs fuel economy

Would running a higher octane fuel lend itself to better fuel economy? I've always run "mid grade" gasoline in my truck, and given the cost I'm considering switching to "low grade" or "regular".

    Scared for the potential meltdown

The more of the news I see coming out of Japan, and the more I see/hear about nuclear reactors and meltdowns, I'm floored. Given how dangerous that power source can be, why would a country so prone to such damage even have them? It's potentially another Nagasaki, and that cloud is going...

    Chains

Does anyone use these infernal things in the winter months? Do you have a preference for the type? Do you carry them during snow months as a rule?

    What's on your 'list'

I have an emergency list of goodies in my truck, and one of a similar nature for the Missus and her van. While they do vary a bit (in part because I'm the more capable, the idea of her jacking up that van to change a flat is enough to make me incriminate myself), there's a few basics common...

    Wiper fluid that cuts grease?

Between the salt and sand on the road, the variances in temperature.... well, some of the water that hits my windshield seems to want to leave streaks and such when I try to 'wash' it off again. Is there a specific wiper fluid that can deal with that, or do I need to sneak some WINDEX into...

    Wow, Canadian driving law?

This is from my son, up in Seattle.... I had no idea, and wow, it's tough stuff. He tells me this is "how things are" in the province of British Columbia, just north of him. You have to write the knowledge exam, and get at least 75%. That gets you a big letter "L" (magnetic, I would assume?)...

    Scared for what could be

I just caught a CNN report about a certain nuclear reactor in Japan, "NUMBER THREE".... and the fact it's a plutonium and not a uranium core. Ladies and gentlemen, another HIROSHIMA and NAGASAKI looms, to hell with the impact on gas and fuel prices. The human price tag is potentially much...

    Gas prices again?

The earthquake in Japan has a major refinery afire over there; Japan is the 3rd largest petroleum consumer in the world. I wonder what that is going to do to supply, demand, and price? It's up over $5/gallon in some parts of Canada as it is!

    Cleaning wiper jets

I have a jet on my truck that is, well, not spraying wiper fluid properly. I suspect road salt and such has fouled it. I was going to run some isopropyl alcohol through the wiper system, in an effort to clean that jet, but the Missus is on my case about alcohol hardening plastics and tubes...

    Wiper blade question

One of the blades on the Missuses van isn't sitting properly, and leaves a section of the windshield "unwiped". I've tried to reshape the durn thing, as I do on my truck, but it defies me. It's also pretty much brand new. Would having it in the garage where it's warmer help so it can be bent...

    Headlights

I'm beginning to really dislike those new fangled headlights on some of the imports, those annoying bluish ones that seem to pierce eyeballs when driving in the dark at night. I wish the manufacturers would standardize headlights, for something that isn't so hard on the approaching traffic.

    Positively P***ED

Look, I don't make excuses for the fact that me and the Missus smoke: we know it's not a good thing, and we don't smoke in the house, but in the garage. We also don't smoke in our vehicles, if avoidable. What has me so hopping mad? I saw a mom, in an SUV, loaded with kiddies.... smoking...

Fiat and GM: Ford & Honda??

I find this pairing ironic, and remember when Honda was first introduced to North America. It was FORD that was entertaining the notion of carrying the new manufacturer, and the Civic was the model. Ford commissioned 4 reps, 2 from Canada, 2 from the U.S., to each drive one cross-country, in...

    What was your first car/truck?

For me, it was a Dodge Rambler. That car had a slant-6 in it, and was tolerant of my youthful abuses (like not checking the oil). What was your first ride?

    Ice in the driveway

The icy conditions have lent themselves to an icy driveway, which is where the Missus parks her van. It's as slick as goose sh*t, and she won't let me salt it: she says the salt will ruin the dormant plants and bulbs in her flower beds (alongside the driveway). What can I use to deal with the...

    Wiper fluids

Is there really a difference in the type of wiper fluid you use? Does the stuff said to be better at 'bug removal' work better than the el-cheapo stuff?

    He taught me something!

I've a boy up in the Seattle area; he bought himself a new truck early last year, and really stepped into it, money-wise. I guess his girlfriend borrowed the truck 2 weekends ago, and forgot to put the windows up when she parked it (she was also smoking in the truck, but that's a different...
