Tune up

How often do you give your car a tune up? Regardless how often you DO, how often do you think it *needs* to be done? What do you include when you do a tune up?

Because I live in a region that gets a really bad winter, I always get my car tuned up in October of November. I am very lucky as I have both a brother, and brother in-law who are car mechanics. Both seem to alternate taking pity on their sister, and they do the tuneups for me. I know they change the oil, and put on my snow tires, but I'm not sure what else they do.
