I don't know what it is and obviously neither do the guys at the tire store. They've had it off the car more times than I can count and eventually the tire always seems to lose air. Any ideas?
It could be the valve stem. Have you tried taking it to a different shop? It doesn't sound like these guys know what they are doing. I have never had a problem with them finding the source of the leak.
Is this a place where you normally take your car? I can not believe they can not figure it out! I would check the valve, too. Then I would find a new mechanic.
Doesn't this kind of thing drive you nuts? I've had it happen to me, too, and I wasn't happy until I just replaced the tube or the tire and was done with it.
I would seriously consider a new mechanic too, at least for this particular problem. I wouldn't think it would be that difficult to find out where it is leaking from. Just spray soapy water on the tire and it should bubble up where the air is coming out.
